To prevent hair fall, it is important to understand why we lose hair. On an average, a person loses 50-100 strands of hair everyday, which is normal. However, when a person begins to lose more than 100 strands per day, it is a clear sign of a hair fall problem. The reasons for hair fall are many and most of them can be solved easily. The biggest cause of hair fall is imbalance of a hormone called DHT – Dihydrotestosterone.

Can stress cause balding

Yes, it’s true. Stress and balding can be related. Hair loss is one of the common symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety can cause long term and permanent stress which leads to conditions causing hair loss.

There are multiple ways this can happen:-

  • Alopecia Areata – Alopecia areata is an auto-immune condition, where the genetic factors are responsible for causing this condition. however, stress can be a major contributing factor when it comes to hair loss.
  • Telogen Effluvium – Intense stress pushes hair follicles into a resting phase. One can observe sudden hair fall while brushing or washing of hair.
  • ETrichotillomania – This is a habitual condition where as a reaction to negative feelings or stress, the person pulls out hair from scalp or eyebrows, sometimes without realizing it.

The good news is stress-induced hair fall is usually not permanent. Management of stress and anxiety can help you reverse or control the hair fall over a period of time. If you do observe a sudden hair loss or a bald patch, it is always beneficial to consult a dermatologist. The doctor can help you diagnose the cause for balding and recommend treatment options for the same.

Di Hydro Testosterone (DHT) is a hormone that shortens the growth phase (Anagen) of the hair. In this phase, the hair follicle shrinks to reduce the thickness of hair. Also, an increased level of DHT causes the hair follicle to harden which prevents blood circulation and supply of nutrients to the hair which eventually leads to hair fall.
