Some Quick facts about Freckles:
Following lasers are available (Fraxel, PiQo4, Ruby, and Gemini lasers) for the treatment of freckles. The laser used in any case depends on the type of freckles, the patient's skin type and the presence of any other skin concern. In comparison to lightening creams, lightening creams can only fade freckles, but they do not remove them. Lasers remove freckles completely generally within one to two sessions.
Freckles which are higher in melanin than normal skin, attract energy from the exposed laser. The energy from this laser is absorbed by the freckle which leads to the destruction of melanin in the freckle and finally, its removal.
The Q-switched ruby laser is used in freckle treatment. It has an extremely short pulse of laser energy, where the pulse lasts only for a few nanoseconds. This high energy production in a very short time creates a photo-acoustic effect on melanin, which shatters the melanin particles.
The Gemini laser is used for the treatment of freckles on Asian and darker skin types. This laser is fired through an extremely cold glass window. This cooling helps in preventing skin damage due to heat. This laser uses longer pulses of millisecond range and is less prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The PiQO4 laser is a type of picosecond laser, which has the potential to further enhance the removal of pigmentation by reducing the amount of heat energy applied to the skin, while also causing a photo-acoustic or mechanical destruction of the pigmentation. The advantage of these shorter pulses is less heat exposure to the skin during laser treatment, and therefore a gentler treatment with potentially less downtime.
Fraxel laser is yet another effective laser treatment for freckle removal which focuses on water in the skin rather than melanin. This method simply exfoliates the surface layers of the skin off, including the freckles. This laser fires very fine segments of laser energy into the skin, sparing the skin between these segments.
Laser treatment is good for freckles delivering long-lasting results.
Usually freckles, once treated do not come back, unless you overexpose your skin to UV rays.
Genetics and sun exposure are the primary reasons for freckles.
